【Department Overview】

The General Surgery Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital) is the first batch of key medical and health disciplines in Shandong province (1995), and the affiliated unit of Shandong General Surgery Professional Clinical Quality Control Center (2006), nationwide base of The standardized residents training in hospital (2006), doctoral and master training units of Shandong First Medical University, Shandong University, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Weifang Medical University, Binzhou Medical University and other institutions. In the early 1980s, under the leadership of the previous generation of experts such as Zhaoting Li, the division of general surgery subspecialties was realized. It is one of the first units in China to start the division of general surgery sub-specialties. The development framework of general surgery in our hospital has also been established. With the arduous efforts of several generations, the discipline construction of general surgery in our hospital has been continuously developed. In 2019, the hospital became the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University. Professor Sanyuan Hu, a well-known general surgery expert in China, served as the hospital's president and established a new general surgery center. Professor Guangyong Zhang, a famous general surgery expert in Shandong province, served as the director of the general surgery center. In recent years, through the introduction of talents and adjustment of the construction of various disciplines, the personnel allocation of the General Surgery Center has been continuously optimized and the discipline construction has been gradually improved. The General Surgery Center is currently divided into 9 subspecialties, including gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation surgery, breast surgery, thyroid surgery, vascular surgery, hernia and abdominal wall surgery, and weight loss and metabolism surgery. In 2020, the General Surgery Center was successfully awarded the "Key Clinical Specialty of Shandong Province". Furthermore, the General Surgery Center is also the vice chairman unit of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association Surgeon Branch, the deputy leader unit of the Laparoscopy Endoscopy Group of the Chinese Medical Association Surgery Branch, the chairman unit of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Professional Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, and Shandong Provincial Medical Association Surgery Branch, Shandong Provincial Medical Association Laparoscopic Surgeons Branch, General Surgeons Branch, Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgeons Branch, etc.

The General Surgery Center currently has 8 wards, with more than 360 beds available. There are 74 physicians in the staff, including 16 with senior professional titles, 16 with deputy senior titles, 7 Ph.D. or M.D. supervisors, 15 master supervisors, 1 Taishan scholar, 2 State Council allowance owner, and many of them have served as the chairmen of various branches of the organization such as the Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Shandong Provincial Medical Association, Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and Research Hospital Association Of Shandong Province. All medical staff of the General Surgery Center spare no effort, unite and forge ahead, and are establishing a leading domestic and internationally advanced clinical diagnosis and treatment, education training and clinical research center for general surgery.

【Medical Works】

The General Surgery Center completes various large-scale operations every year covering all types of general surgery specialties. In recent years, keeping up with the development tide of the times, we general surgery center has gradually transformed into "minimally invasive" and "precise”. Under the leadership of Professor Guangyong Zhang, director of the General Surgery Center, the Gastrointestinal Surgery in our hospital has made great progress in clinical work, clinical teaching, and scientific research. The department is based on various diseases of the GI tract (including benign and malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, intestinal inflammatory diseases, reflux diseases, etc.). Technical and research characteristics in various surgical fields have been established. The department provides total laparoscopic radical treatment for gastric cancer, weight loss and metabolic diseases, robotic gastrointestinal tumor procedures, fluorescence function laparoscopic gastric tumor surgery. The concepts of "minimally invasive", "ERAS" and "precision surgery" are extraordinarily emphasized. At present, laparoscopic and robotic surgery account for about 80% of all operations. Many experts in the department hold core academic positions in professional associations and organizations such as Chinese Medical Association, Shandong Medical Association, Shandong Medical Doctor Association and other professional associations. Currently, there are 1 Ph.D. and M.D. supervisor and 2 master supervisors in the department, undertaking 4 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and several provincial scientific research fund projects. The department staff have clear research directions, publish 3-5 high-quality papers in domestic core journals and SCI annually, aiming to establish a leading regional gastrointestinal tumor clinical diagnosis, treatment and education in Shandong Province Training and clinical research center.

Colorectal and Anal Surgery, led by the academic leader, Professor Lijian Xia, emphasizes the standardized, minimally invasive, and individualized treatment of colorectal tumors, and is committed to the collaborative diagnosis and treatment model gathering laparoscopic surgery, proctoscopic surgery, and endoscopic surgery. While focusing on the development of surgical technology, the department prospectively developed endoscopic surgical technology, and is taking the lead in developing EMR/ESD/EFTR/PEG/PEJ and other technologies in provincial surgical field.

This department is one of the earliest medical centers in China to carry out Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) technology. The center is the chairman unit of the TEM professional committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the leader unit of the TEM group of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the colorectal tumor branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the standing unit of the colorectal cancer professional committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and Vice Chairman unit of the minimally invasive surgery of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology Expert Committee, Gastrointestinal Tumor Branch of Chinese Research Hospital Association. In the past 5 years, the department has presided over 1 Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Benefiting Program, 1 National Natural Science Foundation, 2 Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects, 1 Jinan Science and Technology Development Plan, and won the third prize of Shandong Medical Science and Technology Progress Award.

Hepatobiliary Surgery practices the concept of "precision surgery, fast recovery", featuring "minimally invasive surgery" and " ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery)", and actively develops new technologies and new procedures in laparoscopic surgery for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. At present, difficult laparoscopic operations such as laparoscopic anatomical liver resection, laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, laparoscopic spleen-preserving pancreatic body and tail resection have been routinely carried out. Hepatobiliary Surgery took the lead to carry out new surgical methods in Shandong Province, such as laparoscopic total pancreatectomy with duodenum preserving, triple scopes combined treatment of complex bile duct stones with laparoscopy-choledochoscopy-duodenoscopy methods. Under the leadership of Professor Jie Li, the department has successively presided over 1 key R&D project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 3 Shandong Science and Technology Development Plan projects, with more than 30 SCI papers published.

The liver surgery department of liver transplantation has completed nearly 500 liver transplant operations, including pediatric parent liver transplantation, orthotopic liver transplantation, piggyback liver transplantation, reduced-volume liver transplantation, living donor liver transplantation, combined liver and kidney transplantation, and trans-blood liver transplantation, etc. The transplantation center is in a leading position in the province and the country in terms of number of surgical cases, surgical success rate, and long-term survival rate of patients.

Breast and Thyroid Surgery is committed to the development of new technologies and new projects and has made great progress in breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, breast cancer conserving surgery, thyroid surgical nerve monitoring technology, and endoscopic minimally invasive thyroid surgery.

Vascular Surgery is currently the chairman unit of the Vascular Surgery Branch of the Shandong Medical Association and the chairman unit of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Professional Committee of the Shandong Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. There are 4 master supervisors and 4 chief physicians. At present, the center is in a leading position in the province in many aspects, including fenestration technology for the treatment of complex aortic dissection, branch stent technology for the treatment of complex abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy technology for carotid stenosis, Anjioget aspiration + iliac vein Stent one-stop treatment of deep vein thrombosis of lower extremities, drug-coated balloon expansion technology for treatment of lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans, atherectomy or excimer laser treatment of lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans, CDT catheter thrombolysis for mesenteric arteriovenous blood, Trivex minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities. Undertook more than 10 scientific research projects and won 2 third prizes of Shandong Science and Technology Progress, 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 1 third prize of Shandong Medical Science and Technology Progress Award.

Hernia and abdominal wall surgery have fully covered the surgical treatment of a variety of hernias with laparoscopy, including inguinal hernia, recurrent hernia, abdominal wall hernia, incisional hernia, parastoma hernia, esophageal hiatus hernia, and accumulated rich experience.

Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery is a newly created sub-specialized department headed by President Sanyuan Hu. It is mainly dedicated to the surgical diagnosis and treatment of obesity and its associated diseases, with "sleeve gastrectomy" as the main surgical method, and multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. For technical support, with the concept of "full-process management", it is in a leading position in China, and it is perfectly integrated with the "4th generation Da Vinci surgical robot system" to further promote the intelligent process of general surgery.

【Medical Teaching】

The center undertakes the undergraduate and postgraduate training of Shandong First Medical University, Shandong University, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Weifang Medical University, Binzhou Medical University and other institutions. In terms of undergraduate teaching, the General Surgery Center responded to the school’s requirements by setting up special teaching secretaries in each department, paying attention to the construction of teaching and research section, strictly implementing teaching rules and regulations, standardizing teaching organization, innovating teaching methods, and strictly controlling admissions, internships, and assessments. The quality of teaching continues to improve. The hospital trains more than 10 doctoral and master students every year and sends many doctoral students to overseas cooperative units for in-depth study. In recent years, many students have obtained outstanding graduates from Shandong First Medical University and Shandong University. In terms of continuing education, Dean Sanyuan Hu established the Endoscopy Training Center in 2020. The center covers an area of more than 600 square meters and is equipped with a simulation training room, a multimedia classroom, a 4k full high-definition large-scale animal operating room, etc. The training equipment is advanced and fully functional. The training center carries out 10-12 sessions of general surgery laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment technology training courses nationwide every year, and at the same time undertakes the teaching tasks of advanced specialists, which can train a large number of endoscopy professional and technical talents for hospitals at all levels inside and outside the province.

【Scientific Research】

The General Surgery Laboratory was approved as the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medicine and Health in 2001. Relying on this laboratory, the scientific research output of the General Surgery Center continues to flow. At present, the General Surgery Center's scientific research mainly focuses on the three directions of "domestic endoscopic robot research and development", "digestive tract tumor", and "weight loss metabolic surgery", carrying out related clinical and basic research, and establishing the "metabolic and digestive tract tumor laboratory". Currently, the laboratory undertakes many scientific research projects, including international cooperation projects, National Natural Science Foundations, and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province, etc. The annual approved funding exceeds 10 million yuan, and more than 20 SCI articles are published every year. As the first or main performer, the members of the department have won 1 national science and technology award, 3 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress first prizes, 3 second prizes, and 2 third prizes.
